The tendency to prefer fresh, aromatic foods, safe and ecologically productive habitats, a more pleasant climate and sexually attractive mates, for example, can easily be grasped as the evolutionary cumulative result of fitness-promoting. The evolutionary logic of some preferences is understood fairly well. ![]() By processing relevant information, preferences help to recognize adaptive problems and to motivate the finding of advantageous solutions (Buss 1999). Psychological preferences, however, are evolved mental mechanisms, whose adaptive function consists in the making of decisions in the face of the varying problems of life. ![]() Beauty attracts, ugliness repels, and thus the aesthetic judgment appears to be the reflection of a psychological preference. However the faculty of aesthetic judgment may be defined in detail, on the psychological level it is founded on the evaluation of things and scenarios as “attractive” or “repulsive”.
